International News: UNESCO recognizes Palestinian journalists covering Gaza war with Press Freedom prize

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: UNESCO has announced that all Palestinian journalists covering the war in Gaza have been recognized with the Press Freedom Prize.

As the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day today, media professionals are paying tribute to those lost in the line of duty.

“In these times of darkness and hopelessness, we wish to share a strong message of solidarity and recognition to those Palestinian journalists who are covering this crisis in such dramatic circumstances,” Mauricio Weibel, chair of the international jury of media professionals said.

“As humanity, we have a huge debt to their courage and commitment to freedom of expression,” Weibel said.

Data from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), shows that 97 journalists have been killed since the war began in October, with 92 of them being Palestinians.

The conflict began with Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in 1,170 deaths, mostly civilians.

The United Nations reminds that World Press Freedom Day is a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics and to pay tribute to those lost in the line of duty.
