International News: UNESCO marks World Day for Cultural Diversity with call for greater dialogue and inclusion

By Zoila Palma:  Today, UNESCO is observing World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development with renewed calls to protect cultural expressions and strengthen intercultural dialogue as a pathway toward peace and sustainable development.

According to UNESCO, cultural diversity remains increasingly important at a time when 89 percent of current global conflicts are occurring in countries with low levels of intercultural dialogue.

UNESCO data also highlights the economic importance of the cultural and creative sector worldwide. The sector accounts for more than 48 million jobs globally, nearly half of which are held by women, and represents 6.2 percent of global employment and 3.1 percent of global gross domestic product. The organization noted that the industry also provides opportunities for the largest number of young people under the age of 30.

In an effort to strengthen the role of culture in public policy, delegations from 150 countries gathered in Mexico in September 2022 for MONDIACULT 2022, the largest global conference on culture in four decades. The conference resulted in the adoption of the Declaration for Culture, which recognized culture as a “global public good” and called for culture to be integrated as a standalone goal in the international development agenda beyond 2030.
