By Zoila Palma: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on world leaders to use power in ways that serve people, protect human dignity and build a future that benefits everyone. He made the remarks this week during the opening of the General Debate of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Against a backdrop of ongoing conflicts, widening inequality, climate disruption and the rapid development of artificial intelligence, Guterres urged countries to strengthen global cooperation based on international law, justice and the principles of the UN Charter. He called on leaders to prioritize law over force, cooperation over coercion and shared responsibility over indifference to young people and future generations.
Guterres noted that global influence is increasingly shaped not only by States, but also by private actors and emerging technologies. He stressed that no country or institution can address the world’s major challenges alone, emphasizing the need for effective multilateralism, accountable leadership and collective action.
“The greatest power is not the power to dominate. It is the power to build a future that works for everyone,” Guterres said.
