By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, has accused the Israeli military of deliberately destroying its property, calling it a “flagrant violation” of international law, Reuters report.
This follows claims that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) used bulldozers and excavators to damage UNIFIL’s infrastructure, including a fence and concrete structures, at a peacekeeping position on Thursday.
UNIFIL also reported seeing Israeli troops removing a barrel marking the border’s blue line, a key boundary between Lebanon and Israel.
Since the onset of Israel’s ground campaign against Hezbollah in late September, UNIFIL has raised multiple allegations of attacks on its bases, including direct fire at peacekeepers and the destruction of watchtowers.
Israel, however, denies targeting the U.N. force, accusing UNIFIL of providing cover for Hezbollah fighters. Despite pressure from Israel to evacuate for safety, UNIFIL has remained steadfast in its mission, rejecting the calls for withdrawal.
This latest incident follows a deadly drone strike by Israel on Thursday, which wounded six Malaysian peacekeepers.
The attack occurred as the peacekeepers were traveling through a checkpoint in southern Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced the destruction of a Hezbollah training facility near a UNIFIL base, a claim that UNIFIL has not confirmed.
Israel has accused UNIFIL of ignoring Hezbollah’s activities near the border, a charge the peacekeeping force disputes, noting its regular reports to the U.N. Security Council on such activities.
