By Zoila Palma: Britain’s Royal Navy has successfully launched its first full-size autonomous helicopter, marking a major step in the service’s adoption of unmanned technology.
The crewless aircraft, named Proteus after the shape-shifting sea god of Greek mythology, is designed to undertake high-risk missions without putting personnel in danger. Its maiden flight took place this week at Predannack, Cornwall, where it will be based.
Proteus is intended for anti-submarine warfare and maritime patrols, drawing data from a network of allied ships, helicopters, submarines, and detection systems to track vessels beneath the waves.
The £60 million helicopter is fully autonomous, featuring sensors and computer systems in place of a traditional cockpit, and represents the largest unmanned helicopter ever deployed by the Royal Navy.
While the service already operates drones and smaller autonomous helicopters, Proteus is a significant expansion in capability.
The Royal Navy says the aircraft will help protect Britain and NATO allies amid rising global tensions, providing the ability to monitor vast areas of the Atlantic and respond to potential threats with unprecedented speed and precision.
Officials emphasized the strategic importance of autonomous systems in modern warfare.
