By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: UK lawmakers are set to question fast-fashion retailer Shein and global marketplace Temu on January 7 regarding labor practices in their supply chains, Reuters report.
The hearing, led by the Business and Trade Committee, will focus on employment rights and the potential risks of poor labor standards, including forced labor, in the wake of the government’s employment rights bill.
Shein, founded in China in 2008, and Temu, owned by Chinese e-commerce giant PDD Holdings, have both faced allegations of poor working conditions and forced labor in factories.
Shein, which is awaiting approval for a London IPO, has denied these claims, stating its commitment to human rights and a zero-tolerance policy on forced labor. Temu has made similar assurances.
Shein’s general counsel for EMEA, Yinan Zhu, and Temu’s senior legal counsel, Stephen Heary, along with other company representatives, are expected to give evidence.
