International News: UK, France, Spain and Australia consider teen social media bans

By Zoila Palma:  Governments around the world are moving to restrict teenage access to social media, but experts warn that sweeping bans may be an overly simplistic solution to a complex problem.

Australia became the first country to implement a nationwide ban for users under 16, requiring major platforms to introduce strict age verification measures or face penalties.

Other countries, including the United Kingdom, Spain, France and Austria, are now considering similar policies, while efforts in the United States are largely being pursued at the state level.

The push for tighter controls follows growing concern over the impact of social media on young people, as well as recent legal setbacks for tech companies.

In March, court rulings found that major platforms had misled users about child safety and contributed to mental health harms through their design features. These developments are expected to trigger a wave of new legislation aimed at holding social media companies more accountable, CNBC reports.

However, critics argue that banning teens from social media reflects a failure by governments to properly regulate the tech industry.

Sonia Livingstone, a professor at the London School of Economics, described such bans as a “lazy” response, saying authorities already have laws in place that are not being enforced. She and other experts argue that stronger oversight, higher fines, and stricter enforcement of existing regulations would be more effective than restricting access for young users.

Advocates for reform say governments should focus on “safety by design,” requiring companies to eliminate harmful features and limit practices such as targeted advertising to children.

Proposals like the Children and Teen Online Privacy Protection Act and the Kids Online Safety Act in the United States aim to reduce incentives for platforms to design addictive products.

Experts believe holding companies legally responsible for harmful features would lead to more meaningful change than outright bans.
