By Horace Palacio: On Christmas Eve, a UK-bound flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Bermuda after encountering severe turbulence, resulting in injuries to nearly a dozen passengers, the Ministry of National Security of Bermuda reported.
The incident involved Maleth Aero Flight 1975, an Airbus A300-200, which was en route from Barbados to Manchester. According to the ministry’s statement, the aircraft experienced unexpected severe turbulence at around 12.50 am, leading to the emergency diversion to LF Wade International Airport.
Upon landing, emergency services promptly responded, and the 11 injured passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment. Fortunately, nine of these passengers were released after receiving medical care, indicating non-life-threatening injuries.
The flight, carrying 225 passengers along with 13 crew members, was met by the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service. Emergency medical technicians provided initial assessments and pre-hospital care to those affected by the turbulent episode.
The Ministry of National Security has announced that the aircraft will remain grounded in Bermuda pending a comprehensive inspection. This step is crucial to ensure the aircraft’s integrity and safety before it resumes operation.
