By Zoila Palma: The United Kingdom and France are preparing for another heat wave as intense summer temperatures continue to affect much of Europe.
France’s national weather agency, Météo-France, is forecasting temperatures approaching 40°C (104°F) in the southeast from Tuesday, while an amber heat health alert covering most of England is set to begin Tuesday, with temperatures expected to reach 36°C (96.8°F) later this week.
The latest heat wave comes after months of extreme weather that have fueled wildfires, drought and record-breaking temperatures across Europe, AP reports.
Climate agency Copernicus reported that Western Europe recorded its highest average temperature for the June-July period at 21.62°C (70.92°F), surpassing the previous record set in 2022. Scientists say persistent high-pressure systems have trapped heat over the region, while dry soils have reduced natural cooling and intensified the heat.
France has experienced multiple periods of extreme heat this year, including record-breaking temperatures in May and June.
Public health authorities reported at least 5,700 more deaths than usual during June, while two major heat waves in May and June contributed to more than 2,800 excess deaths in the UK.
