By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. wholesale egg prices have surged to record highs due to an ongoing bird flu outbreak that has slashed laying hen supplies, coinciding with increased demand for eggs during the holiday baking season, Reuters report.
Wholesale prices for large eggs reached $5.57 per dozen in the Midwest, a 150% increase from last year, surpassing the previous record of $5.46 in December 2022.
In California, prices have hit $8.85 per dozen, driven by both bird flu and stricter farming regulations.
Retail egg prices have also climbed, reaching an average of $3.60 per dozen in November, up from $2.50 at the start of the year.
Retailers have been cautious about passing on these costs, but further price increases are expected in the new year.
Bird flu has killed nearly 123 million poultry since 2022, including 35 million commercial egg-layers this year, severely impacting egg production.
The virus, which has also affected humans, continues to spread, with agriculture officials funding vaccine research to protect poultry and other livestock.
