By Zoila Palma: A U.S. guided missile cruiser, the USS Lake Erie, transited the Panama Canal Friday night, moving from the Pacific Ocean toward the Caribbean amid a growing U.S. military presence near Venezuela.
According to AFP, the warship was seen around 9:30 pm as it passed through one of the canal’s locks and continued east toward the Atlantic, days after Washington deployed several warships to the southern Caribbean as part of what it says is an anti-drug trafficking operation.
The vessel had been docked at the Port of Rodman near the Pacific entrance of the canal for two days before beginning its journey.
The U.S. claims the military activity is focused on intercepting drug shipments, but the deployment has sparked speculation about broader geopolitical motives—particularly as tensions with Venezuela escalate.
The move comes as Washington continues to accuse Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of leading a narco-state and has raised the reward for his capture to $50 million.
In response, Venezuela has bolstered security at the Colombian border and launched new patrols of its territorial waters using drones and naval forces.
