By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Hundreds of U.S. visa appointments were canceled Monday at the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia, following a diplomatic row over deportation flights, AP reports.

Colombians who had appointments were informed that their slots were canceled due to the Colombian government’s refusal to accept U.S. deportation flights for Colombian nationals.

Tensions flared after Colombian President Gustavo Petro blocked U.S. Air Force planes from landing, citing concerns over the treatment of deportees.

Petro demanded the U.S. implement protocols for “dignified treatment” before accepting deportation flights. In response, former President Donald Trump called for emergency tariffs on Colombian exports and visa restrictions on government officials.

The situation led to the U.S. halting new visa issuances for Colombians until deportation flights resumed.

Negotiations between the two countries led to a resolution, with Colombia agreeing to resume deportations under U.S. terms.

Visa restrictions and customs inspections remain in place until the first deportation flight is successfully completed.

In 2023, over 1.6 million Colombians visited the U.S. legally, making it the top destination for Colombian travelers.
