By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Department of State has issued a security alert urging all American citizens in Iran to leave immediately due to ongoing hostilities between Iran and Israel, which have closed Iranian airspace.
Citizens are advised to exit by land through open border crossings with Armenia (Agarak), Turkey (Kapikoy and Esendere), or Turkmenistan, but only if they believe it is safe to do so.
Azerbaijan’s border remains closed to general traffic, but entry may be allowed with special authorization coordinated via the U.S. Embassy in Baku.
“The U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety if you choose to depart using these options,” the alert states.
Americans are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and fill out the crisis intake form if seeking assistance.
The State Department stressed that U.S.-Iranian dual nationals are at high risk of detention and must use their Iranian passports to exit.
The Swiss Embassy office in Tehran, which serves as the U.S. protecting power, is closed until further notice and cannot assist.
Internet disruptions in Iran may affect communication, so U.S. citizens should develop alternative plans to stay in contact with family and authorities.
