By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned 35 entities and vessels on Tuesday involved in shipping Iranian oil despite U.S. sanctions.
The department revealed that Iran and its supporters used a complex strategy to evade detection, frequently changing vessel names, flags, and providing false documents, UPI reports.
Treasury officials described this as part of Iran’s “shadow fleet,” which helps fund its nuclear program, ballistic missile development, and regional terrorism.
Bradley Smith, acting undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, stressed that the U.S. is committed to disrupting this illicit network.
Sanctioned vessels include the Belize-flagged Vesna, along with ships from the Marshall Islands, Guyana, Cook Islands, Honduras and other countries.
These vessels have transported Iranian oil to markets worldwide, despite efforts to hide their activities.
