By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has warned it may block flight requests from Mexico and revoke antitrust immunity for the Delta-Aeromexico alliance, citing unfair treatment of U.S. airlines.
The move follows Mexico’s decision to reduce flight slots at Mexico City’s main airport and force cargo carriers to relocate to the more distant Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA), actions the DOT says violate a bilateral air agreement.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the changes, made under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, disrupted operations and raised costs for U.S. carriers, Reuters report.
Delta warned the DOT’s action would harm consumers and competition, while Aeromexico said a joint response is forthcoming.
Mexico’s transport ministry has not commented.
