By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The recent discovery of a New World screwworm (NWS) infection in a cow near Mexico’s border with Guatemala has prompted urgent action from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
On December 13, the USDA announced $165 million in emergency funding to protect U.S. livestock, pets, and wildlife from the parasitic fly, AVMA reports.
NWS larvae burrow into the living tissue of mammals, causing severe damage and often death. While NWS was eradicated from the U.S. in 1966 using sterile flies, recent outbreaks in Central America and Mexico raise concerns of reintroduction.
The USDA is intensifying surveillance, setting up animal health checkpoints, and collaborating with Mexico and Central America to reestablish barriers against the screwworm.
Additionally, stricter import restrictions on animal products from Mexico are now in place.
The USDA also warned that screwworms can infest pets and humans, making early detection critical.
