By Zoila Palma: Taiwan’s National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu said on Wednesday that U.S. support for Taiwan under President Donald Trump remains “very strong.”
According to the Taipei Times, Wu noted that Taiwan is looking to expand its purchases from the U.S., including liquefied natural gas (LNG), to help balance trade.
Despite Trump’s criticism of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and trade surplus with the U.S., Wu emphasized Taiwan’s fair business practices, particularly in semiconductor manufacturing.
Wu also highlighted that Taiwan’s exports to the U.S. surged by 83% last year, with a record $111.4 billion in exports, primarily driven by high-tech products like semiconductors. Taiwan is now exploring additional areas for purchasing U.S. goods, including LNG, especially from Alaska, as the government seeks to diversify its energy sources.
While most of Taiwan’s LNG comes from Qatar and Australia, Wu pointed out that U.S. LNG, particularly from Alaska, would be a valuable option. Taiwan is already in discussions with Alaska to secure future supplies, though Wu did not provide further details.
