By Zoila Palma: The United States has confirmed it carried out strikes on military targets on Iran’s key oil export hub, Kharg Island, though officials emphasized that oil facilities were not targeted.
The operation comes amid heightened tensions ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Vice President JD Vance said the strikes do not represent a shift in U.S. strategy, CNN reports.
Kharg Island remains central to Iran’s economy, handling roughly 90% of the country’s crude oil exports. The small island, located off Iran’s coast, serves as a major distribution point due to its deep-water access for oil supertankers.
U.S. officials have described it as a critical hub for Iran’s oil supply, with storage capacity estimated at about 30 million barrels.
Despite alternative export routes, such as the Jask oil terminal, experts say these options are limited and not capable of replacing Kharg Island’s role at scale. The island’s infrastructure has long been considered vital to Iran’s economic stability, with historical assessments highlighting its importance to the country’s oil system.
Iran has taken steps to reinforce the island in recent weeks, deploying additional military personnel and air defense systems in anticipation of potential attacks.
The U.S. previously struck Kharg Island in March, targeting multiple military sites.
