By Zoila Palma: The United States conducted another strike on a small boat accused of carrying drugs in waters off Venezuela, killing six people, President Donald Trump announced today.
According to President Trump, no U.S. forces were harmed in the operation, which marks the fifth deadly strike in the Caribbean under his administration targeting alleged drug traffickers.
The president said the strike was ordered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and carried out in international waters, with intelligence reportedly linking the vessel to narcotics trafficking and “narcoterrorist networks” along known drug routes.
The strikes have drawn growing scrutiny on Capitol Hill, with members of both parties questioning the legal justification and the lack of evidence presented by the administration, AP reports.
A recent Senate war powers resolution aimed at restricting such operations without congressional approval failed to pass.
In a memo to Congress, the Trump administration claimed the U.S. is engaged in a “non-international armed conflict” with designated terrorist organizations, and that military operations against them are conducted under the law of armed conflict.
Venezuelan officials have strongly condemned the U.S. actions. Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino accused Washington of using drug trafficking claims as a pretext to pursue regime change and warned of potential escalation.
