By Zoila Palma: Officials in the Dominican Republic confirmed Sunday that a speedboat carrying roughly 1,000 kilograms of cocaine was destroyed in a U.S. military operation at sea.
The country’s National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD) said it recovered 377 packages of cocaine from the vessel, which was targeted in what officials described as the first operation of its kind involving U.S. forces in Dominican waters, CBS reports.
According to Dominican authorities, the strike occurred about 80 nautical miles south of Isla Beata, a small island off the Dominican Republic.
The DNCD said the speedboat, allegedly operated by narcoterrorists, was attempting to dock in the country to use it as a “bridge” for trafficking cocaine to the United States. Dominican naval forces assisted U.S. authorities in tracking the vessel before the strike.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy confirmed the operation, linking it to President Donald Trump’s announcement on Friday of a U.S. attack on a drug boat without specifying its location.
