By Zoila Palma: Today, the U.S. State Department began laying off more than 1,300 employees as part of a sweeping reorganization plan under the Trump administration, a move critics warn will weaken American diplomacy.
Layoff notices were issued to 1,107 civil servants and 246 foreign service officers, with most losing access to department systems by 5 p.m, AP reports.
Foreign service officers will be placed on administrative leave for 120 days, while civil servants face a 60-day separation period.
The cuts follow a Supreme Court ruling that cleared the way for the layoffs, which the administration says are necessary to streamline the department.
Critics, including the American Foreign Service Association, argue the cuts are politically driven and damage U.S. global leadership.
Entire offices, including those overseeing Afghan relocation efforts and human rights, are being dismantled. The department says the reorganization will impact more than 300 bureaus and divisions.
