By Zoila Palma: The United States has sent its first humanitarian flight to Cuba as part of a new $100 million assistance commitment aimed at helping ordinary Cubans amid worsening shortages and economic hardship.
The U.S. State Department said Tuesday that the shipment marks the first delivery under the new aid package, which comes as Washington continues to increase pressure on Cuba’s communist government through sanctions and restrictions on oil shipments.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the assistance initiative in May, describing it as an unprecedented aid package intended to support the Cuban people without providing resources directly to the government.
The move comes alongside tougher U.S. measures against Havana, including efforts to restrict fuel supplies and impose additional financial pressure, Reuters report.
Cuban officials initially expressed skepticism about the offer and rejected U.S. demands for political reforms, while blaming Washington for contributing to the island’s power outages and shortages.
However, the Cuban government appears to have agreed to accept the assistance following discussions with officials from the Trump administration.
