By Zoila Palma: After 40 days of gridlock, the US Senate has passed a deal aimed at ending the longest government shutdown in the nation’s history.
The vote, held after a weekend of intense negotiations in Washington, saw a small group of Democrats join Republicans to support a bipartisan agreement.
The measure marks the first procedural step toward restoring federal funding since the government ran out of money on October 1. However, the deal must still pass the House of Representatives before federal employees and services can fully resume operations, BBC reports.
The shutdown, which has stretched into its sixth week, has left around 1.4 million federal employees either on unpaid leave or working without pay.
Essential government services, including air travel oversight and food assistance programs for millions of low-income Americans, have been severely affected. The breakthrough was achieved after Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the White House reached a compromise with Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, along with Independent Senator Angus King of Maine. Republicans, holding a narrow 53-47 majority, needed at least 60 votes to move the measure forward and succeeded with the support of eight Democrats.
The agreement includes a pledge to hold a December vote on extending key healthcare subsidies that are set to expire this year—an issue that had been a major sticking point for Democrats.
In addition to reopening the government, the package contains three appropriations bills to fund agencies such as Veterans Affairs and Agriculture and a continuing resolution to finance the rest of the government until January 30.
It also guarantees back pay for all federal workers and extends funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through September.
