By Zoila Palma: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that the State Department has been denying visas to foreign nationals accused of “celebrating” the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Speaking before his departure from Israel, Rubio said the policy “isn’t just about Charlie Kirk,” adding, “If you’re a foreigner and you’re out there celebrating the assassination of someone who was speaking somewhere, I mean, we don’t want you in the country.”
He emphasized, “Why would we want to give a visa to someone who think it’s good that someone was murdered in the public square? That’s just common sense to me.”
The move is part of a broader Trump administration crackdown on what it labels “hate speech” following Kirk’s killing last week, CNN report.
Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau previously directed U.S. consular officials to monitor social media and “take appropriate action” against individuals who were “praising, rationalizing, or making light of” Kirk’s death.
While Rubio acknowledged he did not know how many visas had been denied or revoked, he said he expected more to follow, remarking, “There’s no shortage of idiots around the world that have decided it’s a great idea to murder someone.”
