By Zoila Palma: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered U.S. embassies to proceed with firing all remaining overseas staffers of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), as the State Department moves to assume control of its foreign aid programs by Monday.
According to AP, the move is part of a broader Trump administration effort to dismantle USAID, despite a federal judge’s injunction temporarily blocking mass federal firings.
Plaintiffs argue Rubio’s order may violate that ruling, though the administration claims the reorganization predates the order.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said the directive was expected and aligns with plans previewed earlier this year. Embassies have been told to eliminate all USAID overseas positions by September 30.
The layoffs mark the near-final phase of eliminating the agency under Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which targeted USAID early in their federal overhaul.
