By Zoila Palma: U.S. authorities say they have dismantled a sophisticated network of illicit electronic devices in the New York area, just as world leaders gathered for the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the U.S. Secret Service, the operation uncovered more than 300 SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards across several sites within 35 miles of the U.N. headquarters.
Officials described the network as an imminent threat, with early analysis pointing to communications between foreign state-linked actors and individuals already known to federal law enforcement.
According to Reuters, the Secret Service said the devices were used to launch “telecommunications-related threats” directed at senior U.S. officials.
Investigators warned the network could have disrupted cell phone towers, disabled portions of New York City’s communications infrastructure, and enabled cyberattacks or encrypted coordination among criminal groups.
The investigation began earlier this year, with federal and local agencies tracking the network across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Forensic teams are now analyzing data equivalent to 100,000 cell phones to determine the scope of the operation and its links to hostile actors.
While the White House has not yet commented, the Secret Service said it could not provide further details on who orchestrated the scheme, which coincided with heightened security during President Donald Trump’s address to the U.N. General Assembly.
