By Zoila Palma: Today, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed economic sanctions on five senior leaders of Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), citing their roles in drug trafficking and violent crimes, AP reports.
The sanctions freeze U.S.-based assets and bar Americans from doing business with the individuals, including CJNG leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, for whom a $15 million reward is offered.
Others named include Gonzalo Mendoza Gaytan, linked to a cartel training site tied to disappearances, and Ricardo Ruiz Velasco, suspected in the killing of social media influencer Valeria Márquez.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called CJNG’s fentanyl trafficking a threat that has “destroyed countless innocent lives.” The cartel was previously designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization in February.
