By Zoila Palma: Today, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States military has begun a large-scale offensive against Iran, declaring that “a short time ago, the United States military began major combat operations in Iran.”
Trump said the objective of the operation is to protect Americans by eliminating what he described as imminent threats posed by the Iranian regime. He called Iran “the world’s number one state sponsor of terror” and accused its leadership of decades of violence targeting U.S. troops, allies and civilians.
Trump cited a long history of hostilities between Washington and Tehran, including the 1979 U.S. Embassy hostage crisis and attacks carried out by Iranian-backed groups.
He referenced the 1983 Marine barracks bombing in Beirut and more recent attacks on U.S. forces in the Middle East.
“For 47 years, the Iranian regime has chanted ‘Death to America’ and waged an unending campaign of bloodshed and mass murder,” he said, adding that the United States would no longer tolerate what he described as “mass terror.”
Trump reiterated that preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon has been a cornerstone of his administration’s policy.
“It has always been the policy of the United States… that this terrorist regime can never have a nuclear weapon. I’ll say it again — can never have a nuclear weapon,” he said.
President Trump outlined sweeping military objectives, saying U.S. forces would dismantle Iran’s missile infrastructure and neutralize its naval power. “We are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally — again — obliterated,” Trump declared.
He added that the U.S. would also move to ensure Iranian-backed militias could no longer destabilize the region or attack American troops with roadside bombs and other weapons.
Trump also warned members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard and other armed units to surrender. “Lay down your arms, you will be treated fairly with total immunity, or you will face certain death,” he said.
Addressing the Iranian public, he urged civilians to remain indoors for their safety and suggested they would soon have an opportunity to determine their country’s future.
Trump expressed hope that U.S. troops would prevail and asked for prayers for service members engaged in the operation.
