International News: U.S. poll shows more than 80% of high school students used AI for homework

By Zoila Palma:  An estimated 84% of U.S. high school students surveyed reported using generative artificial intelligence for schoolwork in 2025, highlighting the growing role of AI in education.

The figure, reported by the College Board, comes as educators grapple with concerns about students using chatbots to produce essays, reading responses, lab summaries and other assignments within seconds.

A survey conducted between spring 2025 and spring 2026 among 303 educators and school professionals in Wisconsin, along with 132 professionals from schools across the United States, found that academic dishonesty and plagiarism were among the leading concerns surrounding AI use.

About 65% of Wisconsin respondents identified those issues as a concern, compared with 74% of respondents in the broader national sample, Fortune reports.

Educators also expressed concern about whether traditional assignments can accurately measure what students understand when AI can generate polished responses.

Nearly half of Wisconsin respondents, 47%, said difficulty assessing student learning when AI is used was a concern, while the figure rose to 53% nationally.

The growing use of AI has also led some teachers to turn to AI-detection tools, but their reliability remains a concern.

A 2025 national survey found that 43% of sixth- through 12th-grade public school teachers regularly used AI-detection applications, while another 27% had experimented with them. However, research has found that these tools can produce significant false positives and false negatives, leading some educators to instead require students to demonstrate their work through in-class writing, oral explanations, handwritten assignments or other methods that provide clearer evidence of independent thinking.
