By Zoila Palma:  The United States has pledged to send aid to Jamaica following the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall on Tuesday as a historic Category 5 storm — the strongest ever to hit the island since recordkeeping began nearly two centuries ago.

With maximum sustained winds of 185 mph, Melissa tore through the country’s southern coast near New Hope, leaving behind severe destruction, widespread flooding, and a humanitarian crisis.

“This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation!” the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned as the storm slammed into Jamaica.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington is ready to assist Jamaica in the aftermath of the unprecedented storm. “We’re watching it closely, and we’re prepared to move,” Trump told reporters, expressing disbelief at Melissa’s intensity. “I’ve never seen that before. I guess it can get that high, but I’ve never seen it,” he said, referring to the hurricane’s record-breaking wind speeds.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC)warned of catastrophic flash flooding and landslides across the island, with officials urging citizens to remain indoors and emergency crews to brace for difficult rescue operations.

Roads, bridges, and power lines have been destroyed in several parishes, while hundreds of thousands remain without electricity.

In a show of international solidarity, technology company Starlink, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, announced on social media platform X that it would provide free satellite internet services to affected areas in Jamaica and the Bahamas.
