By Zoila Palma: The United States will impose tariffs on semiconductor imports from China, citing Beijing’s “unreasonable” push to dominate the global chip industry, according to an announcement by President Donald Trump’s administration today.
While the decision preserves Washington’s authority to levy the duties, their implementation will be delayed until June 2027, with the tariff rate to be announced at least 30 days in advance.
According to Reuters, the move follows a year-long Section 301 investigation into China’s exports of so-called “legacy” or older-technology chips to the U.S., launched under former President Joe Biden.
In a statement, the U.S. Trade Representative said China’s actions “burden or restrict U.S. commerce” and are therefore actionable under U.S. trade law.
China’s embassy in Washington criticized the decision, warning that politicizing trade and technology issues would destabilize global supply chains and vowing to take measures to protect its interests.
The delayed tariffs appear aimed at easing broader tensions between Washington and Beijing, particularly amid Chinese export curbs on rare earth metals vital to global technology manufacturing.
As part of ongoing negotiations, the U.S. has postponed restrictions on tech exports to certain Chinese firms and is reviewing potential shipments of advanced artificial intelligence chips to China.
