By Zoila Palma: The U.S. military killed 14 people in a series of airstrikes on four boats in the Eastern Pacific on Monday, in what officials described as an operation targeting drug trafficking routes.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the strikes, calling them the deadliest day yet in President Donald Trump’s campaign against alleged cartel operations at sea.
The U.S. claims the vessels were transporting narcotics, though it has not provided evidence that those killed were cartel members. One survivor was rescued by Mexican authorities.
The attacks have drawn condemnation from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who said she “does not agree with these attacks” and called for a meeting with the U.S. ambassador to address what she described as violations of international norms.
According to Time, legal and human rights experts have also questioned the legality of the campaign, noting the absence of congressional authorization and the lack of due process for alleged offenders.
Critics, including former State Department legal advisor John Bellinger, warned that the strikes may constitute “extrajudicial killings” under international law.
Growing unease within Trump’s own party has added to the controversy. Several Republican senators, including Mike Rounds, Susan Collins, and Rand Paul, have urged congressional review of the president’s authority to order such military actions without approval.
