By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A U.S. military aircraft carrying 64 deported migrants landed in Guatemala on Monday, marking the latest in a series of flights ordered by President Donald Trump as part of his aggressive immigration crackdown, Reuters report.
The flight departed from Texas and is the third military deportation flight to reach Guatemala since last week.
Trump, speaking to Republican lawmakers, emphasized the use of military aircraft for deportations, calling it an unprecedented move. “We’re respected again,” he said, following a tense standoff with Colombia over similar flights.
Colombia had initially refused to allow US military planes to land, leading to threats of economic sanctions from the White House, before agreeing to send Colombian planes to pick up deported migrants.
Guatemala has so far been the only country accepting these military deportation flights.
The Pentagon’s involvement follows Trump’s national emergency declaration on immigration, which included deploying military aircraft to assist with deportations of migrants held in US detention centers.
The policy has sparked controversy, with critics labeling the deportation flights inhumane.
The US military’s role in this operation marks the first time in recent memory that military aircraft have been used for migrant deportations.
