By Zoila Palma: The United States launched a new wave of military strikes against Iran on Monday, with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) saying the five-hour operation targeted key military sites to weaken Tehran’s ability to attack commercial shipping, Fox reports.
According to CENTCOM, precision strikes hit military targets in Bushehr, Chah Bahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa, and Bandar Abbas, focusing on coastal defense systems, missile and drone sites, and maritime capabilities.
CENTCOM said the operation concluded at 10:15 p.m. ET on July 13 and announced that U.S. forces will resume blockading maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports beginning Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
The military also confirmed that more than 50,000 U.S. service members remain deployed across the Middle East and are “vigilant, lethal, and ready.”
President Donald Trump defended the latest strikes, saying they had significantly weakened Iran’s military by targeting its navy, air force, missile capabilities, and drone production. He argued the military campaign was necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, claiming such a development would threaten Israel and destabilize the wider Middle East.
Trump also announced that the United States will impose a 20 percent fee on cargo moving through the Strait of Hormuz to help cover the costs of providing security in the strategic waterway.
