By Zoila Palma: The United States voted against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s war in Ukraine a sharp departure from its previous stance, CNN reports.
The vote, marking the three-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, saw the US align with Russia, diverging from its European allies.
The resolution, backed by Ukraine and European nations, was adopted with 93 votes in favor and calls for a de-escalation and peaceful resolution to the war.
The US introduced a rival resolution that did not label Russia as the aggressor or acknowledge Ukraine’s territorial integrity, instead urging an end to the conflict and promoting peace.
Ambassador Dorothy Shea emphasized the need for a resolution focused on ending the war and peace talks.
The US later abstained from voting on its own resolution after amendments were made to strengthen its stance against Russia.
