By Zoila Palma:  The United States has issued a security alert for Santa Marta and surrounding areas in Colombia’s Magdalena and La Guajira departments following a 72-hour transportation blockade, curfew and shutdown of civilian activities imposed by an illegal armed group.

The U.S. Embassy in Colombia said the restrictions were imposed by the Autodefensas Conquistadoras de la Sierra Nevada (ACSN), also known as Los Pachencas, following a Colombian security operation against the organization. Authorities have deployed additional Army and police forces across the region.

The embassy reported numerous incidents, including vehicle burnings, intimidation of businesses, shootings and disruptions to public transportation and civilian movement. The group reportedly imposed the shutdown after Colombian security forces killed 13 of its members, including one of its top commanders, during a military operation earlier this week.

The U.S. Embassy advised American citizens to avoid demonstrations and areas with increased security activity, monitor local media and follow instructions from Colombian authorities.
