By Zoila Palma: The United States government has issued a security alert for Americans traveling to Mexicali, Mexico, and temporarily suspended consular activities in the northern border city because of what officials described as a potential threat.
The U.S. notice did not provide details about the nature of the threat or who may have been targeted, AP reports.
The alert, issued Monday night, advised U.S. citizens to avoid government buildings, remain aware of their surroundings and seek shelter if a security incident occurs. Mexicali is the capital of Baja California and sits directly across the border from Calexico, California, making it an important crossing point between the two countries.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that the alert was linked to information about the possible actions of a criminal group. She said the information came from U.S. agencies but that Mexican authorities had not received additional details about what the threat might involve. Sheinbaum urged residents to remain alert while authorities increased surveillance in the city.
Despite the alert, Mexicali remained calm throughout Tuesday.
Mexico’s security cabinet later said authorities had found no evidence of a specific or imminent threat to the population, while increased patrols and surveillance were being carried out as a precaution.
