International News: U.S. Internal Revenue Service furloughs 34,000 employees as U.S. government shutdown continues to affect staffers

By Zoila Palma:  The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will furlough more than 34,000 workers starting Wednesday, closing taxpayer call centers and sending home nearly half of its staff, the agency announced. Only employees handling the new tax and spending law signed by President Trump in July will continue working.

The move comes after Congress and the White House failed to reach a spending deal, with government services disrupted since October 1, Reuters report.

IRS officials said furloughed employees will receive back pay once the shutdown ends, despite the administration suggesting otherwise.

Union leaders are calling for a reopening of the government.

Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, urged lawmakers and the president to act immediately, saying healthcare debates can come later.
