International News: U.S. imposes sanctions on sons of Nicaraguan Leaders and officials linked to gold industry

By Zoila Palma:  On Thursday, the United States imposed sanctions on two sons of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, along with several officials and companies linked to Nicaragua’s gold sector, accusing them of supporting a repressive government.

The measures were announced by the U.S. Treasury Department as part of broader efforts to increase pressure on the country.

The sanctioned individuals include Maurice Ortega and Daniel Edmundo Ortega, both government officials, identified as among the most prominent figures targeted.

U.S. authorities said the sanctions were tied to their roles within the government and their alleged involvement in sustaining the administration’s control. Nicaragua’s government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to the U.S. Treasury Department, additional officials and companies were sanctioned for using corruption within the gold industry to generate revenue for the government.

The U.S. also cited the seizure of a mining company with American investment as part of its justification, with officials stating they would continue targeting financial networks linked to the administration.
