International News: U.S. imposes sanctions on Cuba’s state-owned energy company

By Zoila Palma:  The United States has announced sanctions against Union Cuba-Petroleo (CUPET), Cuba’s state-owned energy company, in a move that is expected to further strain relations between Washington and Havana.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the measures were imposed under President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14404 as part of a broader effort to increase pressure on the Cuban government.

In a statement posted on social media, Rubio accused Cuba’s leadership of using the country’s energy resources for political and financial gain while ordinary citizens endure fuel shortages and power outages. He said the Cuban government has leveraged energy supplies to support state security forces, maintain government interests and advance what he described as a corrupt agenda.

Rubio said the Trump administration wants a future for Cuba marked by greater economic and political freedom and pledged to continue targeting the government’s ability to use energy trade as a source of influence.

The sanctions follow earlier U.S. measures against Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and several members of his inner circle, including relatives of former leader Raúl Castro.
