By Zoila Palma: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out a record-breaking 2,200 arrests in one day, many of them targeting undocumented immigrants enrolled in the agency’s Alternatives to Detention (ATD) program, which uses ankle monitors and check-ins to supervise non-dangerous individuals.
According to immigration attorneys, some detainees were lured to ICE offices through mass texts urging them to report for early check-ins—only to be arrested upon arrival.
Witnesses described emotional scenes at facilities, with family members watching as loved ones were led away in handcuffs, NBC reports.
ICE claimed all those arrested had final removal orders, though some lawyers dispute that.
The sweep follows White House pressure to ramp up deportations, with reports that senior officials were threatened with dismissal unless arrests reached 3,000 per day. The crackdown is part of President Trump’s pledge to deport “millions,” though experts say such targets are unrealistic and risk undermining due process.
Rights groups warned the operation is creating widespread fear in immigrant communities and discouraging compliance with legal processes.
