By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The first severe human case of bird flu in the U.S. has raised concerns about potential mutations that could make the virus more transmissible among humans, the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported.
The patient, from Louisiana, was infected with the D1.1 strain of H5N1 after exposure to sick and dead birds. The virus sample showed mutations in the gene responsible for attaching to human cells.
While the CDC has confirmed 66 human bird flu cases nationwide, most have been mild, USA Today reports.
The outbreak has impacted the egg industry, pushing prices to near-record highs.
No person-to-person transmission has been detected, but health officials are monitoring the situation closely.
Symptoms of H5N1 infection in humans may include fever, fatigue, cough, and sore throat.
