By Zoila Palma: The U.S. government shutdown entered its 36th day today marking the longest in the nation’s history, NPR reports.
The current impasse began on October 1 after Congress failed to reach an agreement on a funding bill.
The deadlock surpasses the 35-day shutdown of 2018–2019 during the Trump administration, which cost the economy an estimated $3 billion in lost GDP.
This time, the political standoff centers on healthcare funding. While Republicans control both chambers of Congress, they require 60 Senate votes to pass a spending bill. Democrats are using that leverage to demand an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire at the end of the year, warning that millions could lose health coverage.
Republicans say they’re open to discussions but only after the government reopens. Meanwhile, the Senate has failed 14 times to pass a stopgap measure, and the House remains out of session.
The shutdown’s ripple effects are being felt nationwide.
More than one million federal employees are working without pay while another 600,000 remain furloughed.
Air travel delays, closed museums, and disrupted national park operations are mounting, and critical programs like SNAP food assistance and Head Start face severe cuts.
