By Zoila Palma: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is preparing to cut airline capacity by 10% at 40 major U.S. airports as the ongoing government shutdown strains the nation’s air traffic control system.
The cuts, which could affect major hubs in Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Los Angeles, and other cities, are expected to begin Friday and take full effect next week, CBS reports.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the move is necessary to manage shortages of air traffic controllers, many of whom are working without pay as the shutdown reaches 36 days, now the longest in U.S. history.
The FAA has not officially confirmed which airports will be affected, but a proposed list obtained includes major passenger and cargo hubs such as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), New York’s JFK and LaGuardia (LGA), and Chicago O’Hare (ORD).
The draft list also names key cargo airports, including Memphis (MEM), Louisville (SDF), Anchorage (ANC), and Ontario, California (ONT). Officials say the list is not yet final, and adjustments may be made before the FAA issues a formal order.
