By Zoila Palma:  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an Emergency Use Authorization for the use of ivermectin to help prevent and treat New World screwworm infestations in cattle, providing another tool in efforts to contain the flesh-eating parasite.

The authorization covers Bimectin, a generic ivermectin injection, for use in cattle within 24 hours of birth, at the time of castration or when wounds appear.

The drug is not authorized for use in lactating dairy cows or calves intended for veal production, Yahoo reports.

The FDA’s decision marks the 14th emergency authorization issued in response to the New World screwworm threat as U.S. authorities work to contain the parasite’s spread.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has confirmed 47 domestic animal cases as of last Thursday.

New World screwworm poses a significant threat to cattle, horses and other livestock because its larvae feed on living tissue and can cause severe wounds and death.
