By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed on Wednesday that U.S. drone flights over Mexican territory are part of a coordinated effort between the U.S. and Mexican governments, calling them legal and not an infringement, Reuters report.
“These flights have been part of a long-standing cooperation,” Sheinbaum said during her press conference, adding that international crime-fighting frameworks are being reviewed.
Her comments follow heightened tensions after U.S. President Trump’s pledge to label Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations in an effort to combat fentanyl trafficking. U.S. officials stated that the unarmed drone flights aim to locate fentanyl labs.
