By Zoila Palma: The United States has reached an agreement with Dominica to begin transferring foreign nationals seeking asylum in the U.S. to the eastern Caribbean nation, a move tied to new visa and travel restrictions imposed by the Trump administration.
The deal was announced Monday, following pressure from Washington that included partial visa limits and entry restrictions on Dominican nationals, Euronews reports.
Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit described the arrangement as “one of the primary areas of collaboration” between his government and the United States.
While he did not disclose when transfers might begin or how many asylum-seekers could be sent, Skerrit said discussions with the U.S. State Department emphasized security safeguards. He noted that restrictions would apply to individuals with violent backgrounds to ensure they do not pose a threat to Dominica’s national security.
The announcement has sparked concern among opposition leaders and members of the public in the island nation of roughly 72,000 people.
Opposition leader Thomson Fontaine said the government has not provided clarity on key aspects of the agreement, including the number of asylum-seekers expected, where they would be housed, or how they would be supported. He questioned whether Dominica has the resources to absorb additional migrants.
The Trump administration has pursued similar arrangements with other countries, including Belize and Paraguay, as part of its broader effort to shift responsibility for asylum-seekers outside the United States.
