By Zoila Palma:  The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a new rule expanding the use of facial recognition technology to all U.S. ports of entry, requiring foreign nationals — including green card holders and other legally residing non-citizens — to be photographed when entering or leaving the country.

Previously used primarily at airports, the updated policy now extends biometric screening to all air, land, and sea checkpoints, Fox reports.

DHS officials say the expansion aims to strengthen identity verification and prevent document fraud across the nation’s borders.

According to the Federal Register, the final rule authorizes U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to collect photographs and other biometric data from “all aliens” departing or arriving in the United States, while removing references to previous pilot programs that limited such efforts.

The department has also requested public feedback on the collection process and potential costs tied to new transportation modes. The expansion marks a significant milestone in the federal government’s ongoing effort to modernize border control systems through technology-driven surveillance.

The rule further eliminates previous age exemptions, allowing facial recognition scans for travelers under 14 and over 79.

DHS explained that advancements in technology now allow accurate image capture across all age groups, noting that biometric verification has become essential not only for border security but also for combating child trafficking.

The policy forms part of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to tighten immigration enforcement and enhance national security through expanded biometric monitoring.
