By Horace Palacio: The U.S. Department of State condemned the Venezuelan Supreme Court’s decision to disqualify Maria Corina Machado, the democratic opposition’s primary winner. The disqualification, announced on January 26, has raised international concerns for deviating from Venezuela’s pledged electoral integrity under the Barbados Agreement.
Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted procedural shortcomings, noting the court failed to provide Machado with the allegations against her or an opportunity for rebuttal. This breach of legal norms casts doubt on the Venezuelan government’s commitment to a fair presidential race in 2024, as agreed with Nicolás Maduro’s envoys during negotiations in Barbados. The agreement stipulated an inclusive electoral process, allowing all factions to nominate presidential candidates freely.
Given these developments, along with recent actions against opposition figures and civil society, the U.S. is reassessing its sanctions policy on Venezuela. The international community is closely monitoring the U.S. response as it considers measures to support Venezuelan democracy and uphold human rights.
The Supreme Court’s ruling signals a concerning turn in Venezuelan politics, undermining the opposition’s efforts and the credibility of the upcoming elections. This development is poised to attract further scrutiny from global democratic watchdogs and could significantly influence the political dynamics within Venezuela and its diplomatic relations.
