By Zoila Palma: Today, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States had carried out a strike in the southern Caribbean targeting a vessel transporting drugs from Venezuela.
Speaking to reporters during an unrelated Oval Office event, Trump provided minimal details but said the operation occurred “literally” moments before the press briefing. “We just, over the last few minutes, literally, shot a boat — a drug-carrying boat,” he said, adding that the vessel was carrying “a lot of drugs.”
According to AP, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio later confirmed the operation on social media, describing it as a “lethal strike” and stating the vessel was operated by a “designated narco-terrorist organization.”
The strike comes amid an increased U.S. military presence in the Caribbean, part of a broader effort to disrupt drug trafficking routes used by Latin American cartels.
While the U.S. has made no indication of launching a land incursion, the Venezuelan government has responded by deploying troops along the coast and border with Colombia and urging citizens to join civilian militias.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has pushed back against U.S. claims, accusing Washington of fabricating a drug-trafficking narrative to justify regime change efforts.
Venezuelan officials have pointed to United Nations data suggesting that only 5% of cocaine trafficked from Colombia passes through Venezuela.
